It is the non-linear dimension of text punctuated by hyperlinks, of the digital image stored in a binary form, and through them, of augmented publication, that interests us. The question of generative processes
in graphic design and variability in typography will be approached through the back and forth between the endless extrapolation allowed by the digital tool and the tactility (ultimate augmented experience, if any?) made possible by the physical object. In order to allow a rebound between these two worlds, our creation process will focus on the implementation of programming systems, analog or digital, favoring a part of randomness.

The title Hypercodex refers to the codex, ancestor of our modern book, and to the notion of code, referring to the primary function of scripture. This term is today inseparable from the ideas of digital chain, computational domain and programming languages, those combinations of characters that command an action. The prefix hyper refers to the 1990s word hypertext, a text ‘freed from the constraint of linearity, exploding in space from left to right, top to bottom, which can be examined from multiple points of view’ (Alessandro Barrico). The term post-digital does not suggest that the digital age is over, but rather that all of our current experiences are now tinged with this reality that has become impossible to leave behind.

The Hypercodex project is led by Judith Poirier and Amandine Alessandra as part of the TAO laboratory at the UQAM School of Design, with the valuable financial support of the FQRSC. The website was designed by Amandine Alessandra and Myriam Bourbeau, and programmed by Jérôme Rigaud. The fonts are Neue Montréal by Pangram Pangram and LoRes by Emigre.

Objectives:

1/ to paint a current portrait of hybrid practices in publishing, particularly through typography and image, fluidly navigating between paper and digital;

2/ to develop experimental printing techniques that detach themselves from the original archival function by embracing impermanence;

3/ to conceive and produce a series of hybrid books, between physical objects and virtual experiences, which will take shape over the course of creation and emulation workshops. This exploration of the possible back and forth between tangible and intangible worlds will allow us to apply to graphic design the notions of variability, ephemerality and perpetual movement, made possible by the digital tool, which is not fixed, unlike paper.

By bringing together traditional know-how and emerging practices, this project is intended to be a fertile ground for multidisciplinary collaboration between researchers, students and experts. It offers a framework for the realization of innovative ideas in publishing design while giving a place to printing techniques, by crossing processes such as letterpress, risography, media image, programming and augmented reality. Located in the School of Design’s CAT laboratory, a place of interdisciplinary experimentation in typography and publishing, ‘Hypercodex’ will offer a unique training opportunity to young creative researchers in design, paired with graduate students from other disciplines (literary creation, programming, history of media art).

The research-creation project Hypercodex: publishing and hybridity in the post-digital era is inspired by the profound mutations currently at work in the practice of graphic design, between tangible objects and augmented experiences allowed by these objects.
