Picatelier : the making of a collaborative poster

Hypercodex and Pica Magazine held a collaborative RISO printing workshop featuring the creation of visuals around the notion of programmed randomness.

After a conference by Amandine Alessandra explaining Hypercodex’s research axes and a presentation of the risographic process by Ève Laguë, participants were invited to generate visuals according to specific constraints that had been assigned to them.

The creation of the visuals was based on three constraints: the layout (the image ratio), the medium, and the technique. Like a prompt sent to an artificial intelligence, unique formulas combining them in a random way were automatically generated and distributed to the participants. They were then invited to create images following these formulas.

Printed in RISO, the participants’ productions were randomly combined with each other by superimposition, each association of 4 images forming a four-colour result.

Following the workshop, Pica Magazine used these collective compositions to design the poster for the launch of the 14th edition of the magazine. The Pica team wanted it to blend the analogue approach with the constraints of digital, adding another collaborative step to this collective project. Subjected to layout, colour transformation and cropping, the compositions resulting from the workshop were once again layered and distorted, to the point of becoming textures rich in colour and form.

In collaboration with Publicité Sauvage, the poster created by Pica Magazine for the launch of the next magazine was printed in 1,000 copies and displayed throughout the city of Montreal between April 10 and 24, 2023.
